Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII) prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. It has also been interpreted to prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation.   Title VII applies to most employers with fifteen or more employees for each working day in each of twenty or more calendar weeks in the current or preceding calendar year.
